Mercedes-owned Smart Car have revealed that the firm haven’t yet ditched plans to release a small SUV. The firm had been considering ditching the idea but have now confirmed that as long as it stays true to the manufacturers city-car values, it could still get the green light.
The initial plans for a Smart SUV date back to more than ten years ago when the car-firm first hinted at the idea, but this initial suggestion was postponed back in 2005. With a boom in demand for small-SUVs and Crossovers the city-car specialists look like reigniting the idea and delivering their own take on the Crossover market.
Speaking at the launch of Smart’s new Brabus, Daimler product manager Katharina Beck was quoted as saying “Our philosophy is to provide urban agility and comfort in the city. These features leave room for different interpretations. Of course, on one hand you need the small turning circle. But if there are different solutions and different requirements from urban drivers then we are always open for new things.” When pushed further by Auto Express the exec said ‘Never say never. Let’s see what the future brings.’
Smart are intelligently opening themselves up to a bigger market. Whilst their current range delivers everything you need from a city-car, consumer markets change and the buzz and excitement around current SUVs and Crossover’s doesn’t seem to be dying down just yet, in actual fact it seems to be doing quite the opposite. Smart did introduce the ForStars concept back in 2012 and it could be that we see a model similar to this before 2020 to sit above the current biggest ForFour model, and then who knows, the Smart SUV could follow shortly after.
