Despite our inconsistent weather patterns in the UK, we are actually one of the world’s largest markets for buying convertible cars.
So now that the warm weather has finally decided to show its face, there’s no time like the present to look in to the convertible car options available in the Mercedes-Benz range.
When it comes to convertibles you won’t get a much more refined and elegantly finished example than the Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet. It may well be conventional in terms of looks with it being a four-seater drop-top but it by no means gets swallowed up by its background.
Mercedes have largely borrowed the athletic lines and tidy detailing from the C-Class Coupe to help the Cabriolet stand out from the crowd. What possibly more accurate to say though is that the C-Class Cabriolet is a miniature model of its big brother S-Class Cabriolet – with the AMG Line model coming with a sleek body kit, five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and a diamond-finished grille.
When it comes ticking boxes, the E-Class Cabriolet pretty much has them all ticked off. It boasts an insulated fabric roof, four sizeable seats and a boot large enough for you to be pleasantly surprised.
With influences being taken again from the flagship S-Class Cabriolet, the downplayed exterior proportions featured on the E-Class actually help it to upstage its more expensive sibling. The masterclass doesn’t stop on the outside either, the overall finish and feel of the cabin breeds opulence, sitting just above the C-Class in terms of quality.
S-Class Cabriolet
The glamorous Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet provides its passengers with a package of exceptional performance and refinement that is unparalleled almost anywhere else on the market.
When it comes to the design of the S-Class Cabriolet, everything is what you’d expect of a flagship Mercedes model, together with a beautifully engineered convertible fabric roof that Mercedes have pointed out is the largest in production.
There are three models in the S-Class Cabriolet range and they are all pretty similar to look at, the only exception being of the AMG model which features a more aggressive front end and side skirts, while the V12 version gets additional chrome decorations to individualise it from the rest.
The SLC isn’t as contemporary as you might think as it’s essentially a rebadged and fettled SLK. The SLK was originally launched in 1996 and went on to be considered an icon in the motoring world, redefining the compact roadster along the way. 20 years down the line and Mercedes decided it was time for a reboot by introducing the SLC to the market.
The SLC pools together sporty styling and bruising performance with exceptional comfort. When it comes to raw top down motoring in this thing it doesn’t have many competitors thanks to its electro-hydraulic vario-roof, which opens and closes at the touch of a button.
This particular Mercedes convertible has stood the test of time – first appearing as a fixed-roof 300 SL back in 1954. Six generations of SL have passed since then, with the latest version coming in 2012 with a facelifted version following 4 years later.
The SL walks a thin line between being a full-blown sports car and a luxury GT cruiser with it playing both parts persuasively. While it perhaps doesn’t have the same drama about it as a AMG-GT Roadster, it still sounds mighty, looks great and has more practicality than you’d expect considering its purpose.
AMG-GT C Roadster
Most people would forgive you if you thought the AMG-GT C Roadster was only concerned with the theatrics surrounding supercar drop-tops. However the experts at Mercedes have managed to fine tune a balance of refined luxury and twin-turbo V8 dramatics all in to one package.
The drive out on the road is immense, but also easy to live with around town thanks to its adaptive dampers and ability to tone things down when necessary. The best thing about the AMG-GT C Roadster though is the ability to drop the top and take in the beautiful sound of that brutal V8 twin-turbo.
